Igloo Roadhouse – Home of the Buxton Burger

Buxton is a very small town in Victoria, about five kilometers from where we were staying during our trip up Lake Mountain. A quick Google revealed the population here is  just under 400. There were three obvious places to eat in Buxton – Igloo Roadhouse, Butters Cafe of Buxton and Bucky Bistro at Buxton Hotel. We had dinner at Butters Cafe of Buxton on our first day and tried Bucky Bistro at Buxton Hotel on the second night. This leaves us Igloo Roadhouse – Home of the Buxton Burger for lunch. The burger served at this place was voted the Best Burger in Victoria in 2005 (by Matt Preston, theage.com.au, June 14 , 2005).

This place is like a fast food joint. The menus are displayed upfront at the counter. Once you have decided (or already knew) what to order, queue up, order and pay up. The number of customers entering Igloo and the number of burgers leaving the kitchen was unbelievable. Majority take-away but if you are a tourist like me, you can take your time enjoying Igloo’s burger at there dine-in area.

Besides their famous burgers, Igloo also offer daily dinner menu and there is a special menu on Wednesdays. (More info can be found at their website.)

There is a Kid Size Menu which really aided us in ordering for Lil’ M. We ordered the Fish and Chips with Free Soft Drink ($7).

We ordered each, the Burger With The Lot – Lettuce, Tomato, Beetroot, Cheese, Bacon, Onion, Egg and Sauce ($8.5). as the Buxton Burger – Double The Lot + Pineapple ($13.5) and Cathedral BurgerTriple The Lot + Pineapple ($13.5) were too much for us. We should have ordered one of Igloo’s famous Buxton Burger and share, just to try the famous burger with pineapple! Anyways, with just the ‘younger brother’, the patty was really good and with the lot, it was delicious. We also ordered a small bowl of chips ($4, portion was huge for us) to accompany the burgers.

This is a great place for good burgers. It would be nice if this place is located in Melbourne! If you are in town, do make a pit stop here and go straight for the Buxton Burger or his ‘bigger brother’! (Do drop me a note on the burgers as we missed the chance to try them!) We were making our way back to the city but had to stop at Fraga’s Cafe Restaurant for coffee and the desert …
